Altoona author to read from novel

Author Steve Sherrill will read from his Pulitzer-Prize-nominated novel, "Visits from the Drowned Girl," at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, in the Edith Davis Eve Chapel at Penn State Altoona. The book has been submitted for consideration in the 2005 awards. Sherrill holds a master of fine arts degree in poetry from the University of Iowa creative writing program and is currently an assistant professor of English at Penn State Altoona. Sherrill began his academic career with a degree in welding before shifting over to writing fiction and poetry. In addition to "Visits from the Drowned Girl," published this year by Random House, Sherrill also is the author of "The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break" (Picador, 2002). He also has published stories and poems in such journals as Best American Poetry, Ploughshares and Georgia Review. In his reading, Sherrill also will read from his work in progress, "Mocksville Lights." The event is sponsored by the Penn State Altoona English program and the Division of Arts and Humanities. Admission is free to the public.
