Penn State Board of Trustees re-elects Baldwin as chair, Broadhurst as vice chair

University Park, Pa. - Cynthia A. Baldwin, judge in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, and James S. Broadhurst, chairman and chief executive officer of Eat'n Park Hospitality Group, Inc., were re-elected chair and vice chair, respectively, of Penn State's Board of Trustees today (Jan. 21).

Baldwin, the first African American female judge elected to the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, broke ground at Penn State last year in becoming the first African American woman to preside over the University's governing body.

A gubernatorial appointee to the Board of Trustees, Baldwin was first elected vice chair of the board in 2001, and was re-elected in 2002 and 2003. She received her B.A. and M.A. from Penn State, and her J.D. from Duquesne University School of Law and holds an adjunct law faculty post at Duquesne University. She served as chair of Penn State's international alumni association from 1991-1993, and was named a Distinguished Alumna of the University in 1995 and Alumni Fellow in 2000.

Baldwin was chosen as a Fulbright Scholar for the summer of 1994 and lectured at the University of Zimbabwe Law Faculty in Constitutional Law and Jurisprudence. While there, she assisted in the development of a trial advocacy program and interacted with the members of the Supreme Court on constitutional issues in the cases coming before them.

A seasoned attorney, Baldwin has been associated with several law firms and served as attorney-in-charge in the Bureau of Consumer Protection in the Office of the Attorney General of Pennsylvania. She is a member of the Civil Litigation Section of the Allegheny County Bar Association and of the

Pennsylvania Bar Association where she served on the Board of Governors and in the House of Delegates. She currently sits on the board of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. A Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania, Baldwin has been honored as Woman of the Year in Law and Government by Vectors/Pittsburgh and received the 2004 Woman of Spirit Award from Carlow College.

Broadhurst was first appointed to the Board of Trustees in 1998 to fill an unexpired term as a business and industry trustee, and was elected for successive terms. He earned a baccalaureate degree from Penn State in 1965, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma, and received the Alumni Fellow Award from Penn State's College of Health and Human Development in 1994 and a Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1997. He also holds an M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh.

Broadhurst joined Eat'n Park as executive vice president and treasurer in 1973 following a seven-year career with Pittsburgh National Bank in commercial banking. He was elected president of Eat'n Park Hospitality Group in 1975 and nine years later became chairman and chief executive officer of the company, which today encompasses three integrated business divisions: Eat'n Park Restaurants, Parkhurst Dining Services and Cura Hospitality.

Broadhurst is actively involved in the Pittsburgh community, serving on numerous boards and committees. In addition, he recently chaired A Grand Destiny: The Penn State Campaign, a record-setting capital campaign completed in 2002 after raising $1.37 billion over seven years to strengthen academic programs and broaden the University's service to the commonwealth.

Several other incumbent officers of the Board of Trustees were re-elected for additional terms: Paula R. Ammerman, associate secretary; Carolyn A. Dolbin, and Joan L. Coble, assistant secretaries; Gary C. Schultz, treasurer; and David F. Marshall, Deborah M. Meder, and Joseph J. Doncsecz, assistant treasurers. Wendy L. Peck was elected to fill a vacant assistant secretary position.

In accordance with the bylaws of the University, President Graham B. Spanier serves as ex officio secretary of the board.

The board also elected members to serve on its executive committee, which is comprised of nine elected members plus the president of the University and the president of the board as ex officio members.
