Women's gymnastics falls to Michigan despite season-high point output

Ann Arbor, Mich. -- The Penn State women's gymnastics team scored a season-high 194.550 but it was not enough as third-ranked Michigan put up a team score of 196.075 to take home the team title Friday night in Ann Arbor.

The Nittany Lions produced season-high scores in three of the four events, including vault (48.925), beam (48.350) and floor (49.175), while also posting a 48.100 on bars.

Freshman Kristal Uzelac (Johnstown, Pa.), competing in the all-around for the first time in her collegiate career, placed third with a 39.175, Penn State's highest individual all-around score this season. Junior Meredith Hoover (Dublin, Ohio) placed fourth in the all-around with a score of 38.725.

The Nittany Lions opened the evening on the bars with Hoover posting a season-high 9.800 to start the rotation off. Sophomore Amie Olaes (Inverness, Ill.) recorded a 9.325, junior Lisa Clark (Philadelphia, Pa.) posted a 9.350 and junior Michelle Ilg (Colonia, N.J.) tallied a 9.075. Uzelac, competing fifth, notched a 9.775 before senior Cecile Allen (State College, Pa.) recorded a team- and season-high 9.850, also good for second place.

Penn State moved to vault, where Uzelac started off the rotation with a 9.700. Borkan and Hoover both followed with a 9.775 and junior Jennifer Orlando (Herndon, Va.) tallied a season-high 9.750. Senior Kate Stopper (Reinholds, Pa.) posted a 9.750 before Clark closed out the rotation with a season-best 9.875, which also earned her the event title for the meet.

On the floor, Uzelac opened up action with a career-high 9.850 and Borkan followed with a 9.175. Orlando posted a season-high 9.825, Stopper recorded a season-best and second-place 9.875 and Hoover notched a season-high 9.800. Clark finished up with a season-high-tying 9.825.

The Nittany Lions ended the evening on the beam, with sophomore Genavieve Shingle (Langhorne, Pa.) notching a season-high 9.650. Sophomores Corissa Pirkl (West Islip, N.Y.) and Ashley Mehrer (Midlothian, Va.) both notched a 9.750 and Uzelac recorded a team- and career-high 9.850, also good for second place. Stopper posted a 9.325 before Hoover ended the evening with a 9.350.

Penn State returns home on Saturday, Jan. 29 with a 2 p.m. contest with Maryland at Rec Hall.
