Scholar and clergyman brings message to campus and Steelton

Scholar and preacher the Rev. John William Kinney brings his message Wednesday, March 23, to Penn State Harrisburg and Steelton. Kinney, dean and professor of theology and historical studies at Virginia Union University’s School of Theology in Richmond, will speak from 2 to 3:15 p.m. in the Oliver LaGrone Cultural Arts Center on campus and will deliver a lecture to the community at 7 p.m. in Beulah Baptist Church, 100 Livingston St., Steelton. Both discussions, installments in the college’s 2005 Multicultural Academic Lecture Series, are free to the public.

Kinney has distinguished himself as a theologian, scholar and administrator in a career spanning more than 20 years. Under his leadership as dean at Virginia Union, the school has developed a doctor of ministry program, experienced unparalleled growth in its master of divinity program and expanded continuing education to include national centers serving more than 9,000 lay and professional church leaders.

He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Marshall University and Virginia Union School of Theology, respectively, and went on to earn a doctoral degree from Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary in New York. In addition to his teaching and administrative duties at Virginia Union, he is developing works on theological methodology in the black church and on spirituality and justice.
