Pennsylvania Centre Stage opens season with 'Fences'

Pennsylvania Centre Stage will present "Fences," April 19 through May 7, at the Citizens Bank Theatre, in the Penn State Downtown Theatre Center. "Fences" is part of the Pulitzer Prize-winner and Pittsburgh native August Wilson Festival to be held April 27 through 30 at University Park. It is being offered to students with a valid Penn State ID at a reduced rate. "Fences" tells the story of Troy Maxson, a hard-working garbage collector living in a northern industrial city in 1957. He had been an excellent baseball player in his youth. Unfortunately, he was prevented from playing in the major leagues because of the ban on black athletes. By the time Jackie Robinson broke the "color barrier" in 1947, Maxson was past his ballplaying prime. "Fences" previews April 19, but opening night is Friday, April 22. For tickets, dates and times, call the ticket center at (814) 863-0255 or (800) ARTS-TIX.
