Donations, volunteers needed for Trash to Treasure program

From now until May 14, University Park students who live on campus can donate any items they don't want -- from CDs and clothing to board games and blankets -- to the Trash to Treasure program. Volunteers will sort through the donations, give any nonperishable food to local food banks, and put everything else up for sale at Beaver Stadium on Saturday, May 28. Last year, students gave 73.2 tons of usable items and more than 13,000 pounds of food, and the sale raised more than $54,000 for 36 local health and human service organizations supported by the United Way. Volunteers are needed to help prepare for the sale, to assist on sale day and to clean up the day after the sale. Those interested in volunteering can visit http://www.hfs.psu.edu/treasure/volunteer for more information. For help with what donations will be accepted and where they can be dropped off, students should stop by their housing office or visit http://www.hfs.psu.edu/treasure online. The Trash to Treasure sale is a cooperative effort between Penn State and the Centre County United Way. Cash proceeds benefit the Centre County United Way member organizations.
