Penn State Diabetes Research Retreat planned for May 6

April 28, 2005

The 2005 Penn State Diabetes Research Retreat will be held Friday, May 6, at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on the University Park campus. All scientists, physicians and other health-care providers with an interest in diabetes research are encouraged to attend.

The retreat will include an overview of Penn State Diabetes Center and sessions on five focus areas:

-- physical activity and nutrition in diabetes and prevention and treatment;

-- understanding the mechanisms that lead to obesity, pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes;

-- devices and computers in the treatment of diabetes;

-- redesigning diabetes health care; and

-- diabetes complications.

Scott E. Campbell, national vice president for research programs at the American Diabetes Association, also will speak on diabetes from the association's perspective, and a poster session will present research interests in a variety of areas related to diabetes.

The goal of the retreat is to bring together scientists and physicians interested in diabetes into collaborative research groups and set the direction for future research efforts.
