Peace Pole dedicated at University Park

University Park, Pa. -- The Penn State Peace Pole, a marker to serve as a constant reminder to the University community to contemplate and work for world peace, was dedicated on Friday, May 6, outside the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center on the University Park campus. The short ceremony in the grove of trees at the corner of Curtin and Allen Roads directly in front of the Pasquerilla Center was open to the University community and the general public. A Peace Pole is a handcrafted monument that displays the message "May Peace Prevail on Earth." There are more than 200,000 Peace Poles in more than 180 countries around the world, including such locations as the Pyramids of El Giza, Egypt; the Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima; Gorky Park in Moscow; Sarajevo; and the Vatican.

The installation and dedication of this Peace Pole was made possible by a donation of the Harrisburg-Hershey Chapter of the Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR). The group is dedicated to international cooperation, preventative diplomacy and disarmament.

The Peace Pole Project was started in Japan in 1955 by the World Peace Prayer Society, a nondenominational organization. The goals of the project are to uplift humankind toward harmony rather than conflict.
