Class of 2005 seeks proposals for class gift art work

University Park, Pa. -- Graduation has come and gone, but members of Penn State's class of 2005 are still working diligently to make their class gift to the University a reality. The class invites artists to submit proposals for a work of art to be located near the HUB-Robeson Center on the central part of the University Park campus.

Last fall, the class voted to present as its gift the HUB-Robeson Center Sesquicentennial Commemorative Piece, a work of art intended to show the progression of student life and activities over the 150 years since Penn State's founding. The piece will be located outdoors in a section of the soon-to-be expanded HUB terrace. The HUB serves as a student union and cultural center for more than 41,000 students and 11,000 faculty and staff.

Proposals are due Sept. 30, 2005, and will be judged by a panel of students and University officials.

"The subject of this work should be specific to Penn State student life, but can be interpreted in many ways by the artist," said Lauren Steinberg, assistant director of annual giving in the Office of University Development and class gift adviser. "The selection process and funding for this work will meet the highest professional standards, and Penn State will make available a purchase fee of up to $70,000, which must include all installation costs."

The competition is open to all interested artists. Each artist may submit only one entry. The finished piece should be dedicated in the fall of 2006.
