Jacqueline McLaughlin, assistant professor of biology at Penn State Lehigh Valley, accepted the "Bringing the World to Pennsylvania" award for CHANCE, an international professional development program, from The Pennsylvania Council for International Education. This award supports and gives visibility to international/multicultural collaborative projects between kindergarten-to-12th-grade and higher-education institutions in the state of Pennsylvania. McLaughlin developed and directs CHANCE, which works closely with conservation sites and established researchers/organizations/academic institutions in Pennsylvania and around the world. CHANCE is a program for expanding the relationships among Penn State, the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Pennsylvania high-school teachers, researchers from the Caribbean Conservation Cooperation and Asociacion ANAI, the Minister of Education of the Republic of Costa Rica and Costa Rican high school teachers. The project's goal is to provide new experiential learning resources for Pennsylvania secondary science and environmental education teachers.
