Faculty Senate announces next meeting agenda

The University Faculty Senate will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, in 112 Kern Graduate Building, University Park. The items below will be considered at the meeting.

-- The Senate Universrity Planning Comimttee will sponsor a report by Rodney A. Erickson, executive vice president and provost, on the University's 2005-2006 operating budget. He also will discuss the University's budget plan and appropriation request for 2006-2007.

-- The Senate will take action on an advisory and consultative report from the Faculty Affairs Committee with recommendations for creating a new policy (HR70) for dismissal of tenured or tenure-eligible faculty members. This new policy will provide operational proceduces for the Senate's Standing Joint Committee on Tenure.

-- The Intercollegiate Athletic Committee will recommend a revision to Senate Policy 67-00, Athletic Competition, section 2, Eligibility of Athletes and the Undergraduate Education Committee will propose revisions to Senate Policies 51-50, 60-00 and 60-10, Cumulative Grade-Point Averages, Completing More than One Undergraduate Major Program (Sequential or Concurrent Majors) and Concurrent Majors Program.

The Senate will receive the following informational reports:

-- Promoting student learning: The emerging role of Student Affairs at Penn State. Vicky Triponey, vice president for Student Affairs, will present a report focusing on new initiatives promoting student engagement, improving the co-curriculum through purposeful education and promoting quality services for students across the University.

-- Penn State World Campus update. Peter Rubba, senior director of the World Campus, will present this report that focuses on enrollments, programs offered, enrollment projections and the distribution of faculty teaching in undergraduate and graduate programs in 2005-2006.

-- Scott Kretchmar, Penn State's NCAA faculty athletic representative, will present data on academic eligibility and athletic scholarships awarded in 2004-2005. His report also will include an overview of academic performance of student-athletes and graduation rates.

-- Faculty Senate Scholarship Awards to Undergraduates. This report shows the distribution of scholarships across campuses, colleges and classes.

-- The Joint Committee on Insurance and Benefits will give its annual report focusing on health-care rates and plan changes, wellness initiatives, retiree health plans, prescription drug coverage and TIAA-CREF plan revisions.

-- Equity in Faculty Development Funding. This informational report examines questions from the 2004 University Faculty Staff survey that addressed faculty development. From this analysis, the Faculty Affairs committee offers four areas for further evaluation.

Members of the University community may attend this meeting. Any member of the University community not a member of the Senate may request the privilege of the floor on any item of business already before the Senate. Such a request must be made to the chair, through the executive secretary of the Senate, at least four calendar days before the meeting at which the individual wishes to speak.
