November is a performance-packed month for School of Music

The Penn State School of Music has announced the following performances and activities in November.

Viola studio recital: The Penn State Viola Studio, under the direction of Timothy Deighton, will present a recital at 8 p m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, in Esber Recital Hall, Music Building I, University Park. The recital will be free to the public.

Brewster Competition: The Marjorie Jane Brewster Memorial Scholarship Competition will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, in Esber Recital Hall, Music Building I, University Park. This competition is for students who would like to pursue a graduate degree in one of five areas of music: composition, conducting, performance, scholarship and teaching. Students must be nominated by a faculty member and the competition will be free to the public.

Bandorama: The Penn State Blue Band and Symphonic Band will present a joint concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, in Eisenhower Auditorium, University Park. The Blue Band, under the direction of Richard Bundy, will performing a musical review of the 2005 season, which will feature the entire Blue Band on stage including the Blue Band Silks, the Touch of Blue, Blue Sapphire, PJ Maierhofer and Drum Major Kevin Rudy. The Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dennis Glocke and assistant conductor Jonathan D. Watts, also will perform. Tickets are $16 for adults, $6 for youths 18 and under and $11 for students and are on sale now by calling (800) ARTS-TIX.

Musica Nova: Musica Nova, a concert of new music performed by Penn State students and faculty, will occur at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, in the Esber Recital Hall, Music Building I, University Park. This concert includes the presentation of newly composed works by composers in the composition program of the School of Music. The concert is free to the public.

Penn State Concert Choir: The Penn State Concert Choir, conducted by Lynn Drafall, will perform its annual autumn concert at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, in Esber Recital Hall, Music Building I, University Park. Tickets are available at the door and are $4 for general public and $2 for students.

Faculty recital: Robert Nairn will present a faculty double bass recital at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7, in Eisenhower Chapel, University Park. The recital will be free to the public.

Marimba recital: Guest artist Alison Shaw will present a solo marimba recital at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7, in Esber Recital Hall, Music Building I, University Park. She will perform works by Bach, contemporary American composers and compositions by Japanese marimbists. The recital will be free to the public. Shaw is on the music faculty of The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. An advocate of contemporary chamber music, she is executive director and cofounder of Quorum Chamber Arts Collective, a mixed-instrumentation sextet devoted exclusively to commissioning, recording and performing new works. Shaw also tours extensively with the percussion/tuba duo, Balance, a collaboration that has produced several commissions for this unique combination in addition to transcriptions of popular and folk music. She serves as principal timpanist with the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra and tours and records as principal timpanist with the Brass Band of Battle Creek.

Symphonic Wind Ensemble: The Symphonic Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dennis Glocke, associate professor of music, will perform a concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, in Esber Recital Hall, Music Building I, University Park. The program will feature Penn State faculty member Timothy Deighton on viola. Tickets for the concert are $4 for general admission and $2 for students and may be purchased at the door.

Oriana Singers: The Oriana Singers, conducted by Lynn Drafall, will celebrate their 10th anniversary with a concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, in the Worship Hall of the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center, University Park. Alumna of the Oriana Singers will join the current membership for the second half of the program. A reception for alumna will follow the performance. Tickets are available at the door and are $4 for general public and $2 for students.

Chamber Singers: The Chamber Singers, under the direction of Christopher Kiver, will perform a concert from noon to 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, at the Palmer Art Museum, University Park. The concert is free to the public.

"Opera Intermezzo": The Penn State Opera Theater, directed by Susan Boardman, will present "Opera Intermezzo: An Evening of Favorite Opera Scenes" at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 18 and 19 in Esber Recital Hall, Music Building I, University Park. This will be the opera debut of Helen Manfull, professor emerita of theatre. Tickets are $4 for general admission and may be purchased at the door. Women's Chorale: The Women's Chorale, under the direction of Jayne Glocke, will present a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, in Esber Recital Hall, Music Building I, University Park campus. Also performing will be Cantante with Aimee Trimmer conducting. Tickets for the concert are $4 for general admission and $2 for students and may be purchased at the door.
