October 21, 2005

Penn State President Graham B. Spanier presented Pennsylvania Secretary of State Pedro A. Cortes with the Penn State Alumni Fellow Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Penn State Alumni Association, during a ceremony held Oct. 19 at University Park. Cortes graduated from the law school in 1999, and, as a participant in the joint juris doctorate/master of public administration program, earned his master's degree in public administration from Penn State Harrisburg in 2000.

In his acceptance address, Cortes thanked Dean Philip J. McConnaughay of The Dickinson School of Law, Chancellor Madlyn J. Hanes of Penn State Harrisburg, Gov. Ed Rendell and members of his staff at the Department of State for their support. "Without the support and instruction of Penn State," said Cortes, "I would not have received the opportunities I have had."

Instituted in 1973, the Alumni Fellow Award recognizes select alumni who are leaders in their professional fields. McConnaughay and Hanes nominated Cortes for the award.
