Daniel J. Doyle, an award-winning faculty member and former administrator at Pennsylvania College of Technology, has been honored with faculty emeritus status by the college's board of directors.
The board recently approved the designation for Doyle, who was a professor of history and a former division director at Penn College and its immediate predecessor, Williamsport Area Community College. Doyle was employed full time by the college from Sept. 1, 1967, until his retirement on Aug. 1.
Doyle was recommended for emeritus status by the college's promotion and sabbatical committee, and the recommendation was approved by Penn College President Davie Jane Gilmour.
"He was an excellent faculty member who made significant contributions -- in and out of the classroom," Gilmour said.
Doyle, who holds a doctoral degree from St. John's University, received the highest honor for faculty at Penn College -- the Master Teacher Award -- in 1984.
In 2003, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant, teaching in Egypt for the fall semester that year. Recipients of the Fulbright Scholar awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement and for demonstrating extraordinary leadership potential in their fields.
In the 1980s, Doyle chaired the committee conducting the self-study for the Middle States Association Commission on Higher Education accreditation process at Penn College. His career at the college includes a stint as director of integrated studies at Williamsport Area Community College from 1985-88.
"Dr. Doyle's dedication to the students and their learning, his scholarship, his leadership and his commitment to lifelong learning embody the college philosophy," said Veronica M. Muzic, vice president for academic affairs/provost.
