Instructor to teach course at National Disaster Management Conference

Penn State Mont Alto nursing instructor Linda Carl was invited by the president of the Society of Critical Care Medicine to serve as faculty at the January Critical Care Congress in San Franscico. She will teach an international Fundamentals of Disaster management course to physicians from around the world who will be attending the national annual conference.

Recent world events have exemplified the need for Fundamentals of Disaster Management courses. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the bombings in London, and the disasters in Pakistan and India are a reminder of the need for trained medical personnel in times of emergency.

The goal of the course is to facilitate the delivery of training in skills commonly needed to manage a disaster and victims of a mass-casualty incident.

Carl earned a master of science in nursing administration from George Mason University, a bachelor's degree in nursing from Catholic University, a bachelor's degree in psychology from American University and trained to become a registered nurse at the Washington Hospital Center School of Nursing. Before coming to Mont Alto, Carl taught nursing classes online through University of Phoenix, and she was an assistant visiting professor of nursing at Shepherd University. She also has worked recently as a staff nurse and a nurse manager at War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; a chief nurse at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C.; and director of clinical services at Occu-health Inc., overseeing health operations of five NASA sites.
