Matthew S. Clouser and Shaun R. Bentz, both civil engineering technology students at Pennsylvania College of Technology, have earned scholarships from American Infrastructure Inc., a Worcester-based, heavy-construction firm.
In addition to a bachelor's degree in civil engineering technology, Clouser, a rural East Waterford resident, is pursuing an associate degree in surveying technology. He plans to earn public land surveyor and professional engineer licenses and follow in the footsteps of his brother, an alumnus of Penn College's civil engineering technology major.
Bentz, a Pottstown resident, also is pursuing a surveying technology degree and a civil engineering technology degree. He has spent two summers working for American Infrastructure as a general laborer helping with road work. Next summer, he hopes to work more on the engineering side of the company, but he said it has been interesting to experience on-site labor, observing how projects move from the engineering phase to final construction.
Bentz is president of the student chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors at Penn College and is a member of the college's student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, an honor society for associate-degree
students, and has earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
After graduation, Bentz would like to work for American Infrastructure or an independent engineering firm.
Both students received $1,000 scholarships, with money split between the fall and spring semesters.
The scholarship is open to students in diesel technology, heavy construction equipment technology, surveying technology, civil engineering technology or construction management majors, with preference given to employees of American Infrastructure member companies and their family members.
