Berks students' enthusiastic efforts support Thon

This weekend, Feb. 17 to 19, Penn State students from every campus will gather at Rec Hall on the University Park campus, for Thon -- the 48-hour dance marathon to benefit the Four Diamonds Fund supporting families battling pediatric cancer.

Putting on their dancing shoes from Penn State Berks, who for the first time has two dancer pairs participating, are juniors Tyler Matthews and Angela Phillippy, sophomore Danielle Myers, and first-year student Jill Caffrey, who will spend their weekend on the dance floor as other Penn State Berks students cheer them on.

Thon activities began at Berks campus in October 2005. Over the next four months leading up to the Thon main event, the campus Thon committee conducted "Berks Idol" -- a campus talent competition, as well as ice skating fundraisers, a date auction and a 12-hour mini-Thon at the Fairgrounds Square Mall in Muhlenburg Township.

The results will be formalized in early March, but corporate donations from various community groups and businesses should help the committee exceed their goal of $9,000. Anyone who is interested in contributing to The Four Diamonds Fund or has any questions can call the Penn State Berks Thon chair, Deborah Attewell, at (610) 396-6634.

For the second year in a row, students from the College of Communications plan to provide live streaming audio and video coverage of Thon. The student Webcast will be available at http://www.thon.org or http://www.comm.psu.edu online. In addition, Penn State Public Broadcasting will stream its Thon coverage at both its home site of http://www.wpsu.org and on Penn State Live at http://live.psu.edu/ online.
