Professor awarded Humboldt Research Award

University Park, Pa. -- David J. Green, professor of materials science and engineering, is a recipient of a 2006 Humboldt Research Award.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grants up to 100 Research Awards annually to scientists and scholars with internationally recognized academic qualifications, but who reside outside Germany. The award honors a lifetime of research. Award recipients are encouraged to pursue research in cooperation with colleagues in Germany for between six months and a year.

Green will research the mechanical behavior of ceramics at the Technical University in Darmstadt, Germany, with Professor Juergen Roedel. They will investigate the stresses that occur during the drying of ceramic thin films and the influence of strain mismatch during the processing of ceramic materials. These stresses cause damage and distortion during processing affecting the quality and performance of materials.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation was established in 1953 by the Federal Republic of Germany to promote international research cooperation.
