Registration opens Sept. 1 for Walking Works

August 31, 2006

The fall edition of Walking Works begins in two weeks. Online registration for teams and individuals is Sept. 1-13. To register, log onto http://www.pennstatewellness.com online. Note that this is a different Web site than the spring campaign. Participants also will also use this Web site to log their steps. Teams are encouraged to pick a captain and a co-captain to register and motivate the team.

Once again, the competition is open to anyone affiliated with the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine community. Anyone in the campus community may join on a team of up to six people or sign up individually.

The Walking Works kick-off event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, in the hospital cafeteria. Participants can purchase Walking Works T-shirts, take the body composition test and team captains can pick up pedometers for new participants only.

The 12-week program runs from Saturday, Sept. 16, to Friday, Dec. 8.

Individuals who currently participate in the maintenance program to earn health reimbursement arrangement (HRA) points (step four of the spring campaign) will simply continue to enter their individual steps; however, effective Sept. 16, they will begin to enter their steps at http://www.pennstatewellness.com on the Web. These individuals also may choose to be part of a team for the fall campaign; however, points will be awarded based on the step four program.

Individuals who did not participate in the spring campaign for HRA points and wish to participate in the fall campaign for HRA points must sign up as an individual by completing steps one and two during the registration period, and they must begin logging their steps Sept. 16. These individuals are also eligible to be part of a team.

The body composition test will also be available on campus on the following dates: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 19 in Academic Support Building room 3000A; noon to 1 p.m. and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at the University Fitness Center; and noon to 1 p.m. Sept. 21 in cafeteria dining room A.
