Engineering science's Bakis wins ASC Award

Charles Bakis, professor of engineering science and mechanics, has been selected to receive the 2006 American Society for Composites (ASC) Award. The award recognizes a distinguished member of the composites community who has made a significant impact on the development of composite materials through applied research, practice, education, service, advocacy or leadership.

Bakis will receive a plaque and a check for $1,000 at the 21st annual ASC Technical Conference at the University of Michigan, Dearborn.

A faculty member since 1988, he received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University and his master's degree and doctorate in engineering mechanics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

The ASC is an all-volunteer group of dedicated professionals in academia, industry, national laboratories and federal agencies whose mission is to provide a communication forum for the engineering and scientific community in composites; to expedite the growth of knowledge gained from interdisciplinary engineering and scientific research; and to promote the exploitation of the unique properties of composite materials in emerging applications.
