Exhibit features architecture of Berlin

"Berlin: Diverse Architectural Viewpoints," photographs by Gary L. Catchen, Penn State professor of nuclear engineering and architectural photography, is on display through Sept. 30 in the Arts and Humanities Library, second floor Pattee Library, University Park.

Catchen's pictures of 20th-century buildings underscore Berlin's importance as a design center and demonstrate the expressive and documentary techniques of architectural photography. Catchen's approach to architectural photography employs chiaroscuro, composition and control of perspective to create a mood that evokes his concept of the design and function of the building or space.

Since 1997, Catchen has been photographing German architecture and investigating its history. A collection of recent examples of his black and white photography can be found at http://www.psu.edu/courses/arch/arch497_g9c/ online.
