Faculty tenure celebrated with book selection

The University Libraries hosted its fourth annual reception recognizing newly tenured faculty's contributions to a book selection program recently at Pattee Library, University Park. The Penn State Promotion and Tenure Recognition Program, an annual initiative first implemented by Rod Erickson, executive vice president and provost, in 2003, celebrates faculty achieving tenure by asking each one to select a book for the University Libraries' collection. The chosen book includes a bookplate to commemorate the faculty member's achievement. Books selected and personal statements about their significance are displayed during the reception where members of the administration, the libraries, colleges and departments join those honored.

Erickson and Nancy L. Eaton, dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications, were the speakers at the recent reception.

A related exhibit, "Honoring Recently Promoted and Tenured Penn State Faculty," will be on display through Jan. 7 in the Candace and Patrick E. Malloy III Diversity Studies Room, 109 Pattee Library, University Park. Books chosen reflect wide-ranging interests among Penn State's faculty, while written statements about the selections give a personal, and often candid, snapshot of the faculty, with the potential to inspire students and others.

The Promotion and Tenure Recognition Program's Web site, featuring complete lists of selected books and accompanying personal statements, is at http://apps.libraries.psu.edu/ptrecog/about.cfm online.
