Students to construct straw-bale house on HUB lawn

Students from the Schreyer Honors College Leadership Jumpstart class will build a straw bale house from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, on the HUB lawn at University Park. The event is free to the public.

The event is designed to raise awareness on alternative housing options. Bales of straw are a renewable natural resource and an excellent insulation material. For the past few years, Penn State students have been heading to Montana to build straw bale homes for the Northern Cheyenne tribe as part of the American Indian Housing Initiative (AIHI).

Visitors also will have the opportunity to learn about current projects at the Center for Sustainability, including the Solar Decathlon competition and the AIHI. The students will have information tables Wednesday and Thursday inside the HUB to answer questions and promote the clubs and upcoming event.
