12th annual Road Scholars Tour planned for May 14-16

The 12th annual Road Scholars Outreach Pennsylvania Spring Tour will take place May 14-16. The tour, begun by Penn State President Spanier in 1996, takes new and newly tenured faculty on a tour of Pennsylvania, visiting campuses and touring businesses and popular historic sites, learning about the University and the state along the way.

"In my 12 years as president of Penn State, I have continued to be impressed by the impact Penn State has every day on so many lives," said Spanier. This tour will allow new and newly tenured faculty to experience this phenomenon as well.

The tour, which departs from University Park, includes visits to Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, a private tour of the State Capitol Building, Penn State Mont Alto, The Hershey Co., an Amish farm, Penn State Berks, GoggleWorks Center for the Arts in Reading, Starbucks York Roasting Plant, Penn State York, and Gettysburg National Military Park.

Once the tour has embarked, the University will provide all lodging, transportation and meals. Colleges or departments will be asked to cover any additional costs incurred by participants not based at University Park, such as transportation to and from University Park, and lodging at University Park, if needed.

Final details of the trip are being arranged. In the spring, new and newly tenured faculty will receive a tour brochure with registration information. At that time, those interested in joining the tour should complete the online registration. Space on the tour is guaranteed to all faculty who have joined Penn State in the last two years and have not been on a Road Scholars tour before. Others may sign up for this tour on a space available basis. For more information, contact Nancy Eckard at nzm1@psu.edu or Kathy Karchner at ksk6@psu.edu via e-mail.
