Upcoming events boost fitness, benefit health-care programs

Three upcoming fitness events are planned to benefit health-care programs at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

The Inaugural F. Lee Shipman Memorial Colon Cancer Prevention 5K Run and Fun Walk is scheduled for Saturday, May 5, beginning at the Harrisburg Area YMCA. Onsite registration begins at 7:30 a.m., and the race begins at 9 a.m. Pre-race registration is $18 or $22 on event day. The event will be held rain or shine. Prizes will be offered to the top male and female finishers.

All proceeds from the event benefit colorectal cancer prevention, testing and counseling at the Medical Center. To register for the event or for more information, call Marjorie Lebo at (717) 531-5164.

The Kay Kalenak Memorial Golf Classic to benefit the Division of Palliative Medicine is scheduled for Friday, May 25, at the Hershey Country Club. An amateur individual stroke play event begins at 8 a.m., followed by a luncheon and awards program at 12:30 p.m. Registration for a modified scramble format begins at 11:30 a.m., teeing off at 1:15 p.m. Dinner and an awards program will be held at 6 p.m.

A raffle drawing will take place at 6 p.m. for three prizes: a 14-karat yellow-and-white gold necklace set with seven round, brilliant-cut diamonds valued at $4,000; a Sony HD 46-inch LCD television valued at $2,499; and a Polaroid 7-inch portable DVD player with case valued at $150. The fifth annual Children's Miracle Network Balloon Chasers' 5K Run/Walk and 1-Mile Fun Run will take place Saturday, June 2. The event starts and ends at the University Fitness Center on the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine campus. Children's Miracle Network's (CMN) mission is to raise funds for children's services and create community awareness of children's issues. All money raised by CMN in central Pennsylvania goes directly toward patient services, research, equipment, program services and educational resources at Penn State Children's Hospital.
