Are almonds as good for you as experts say they are?

Almonds are a nutritionally dense food, providing such nutrients as calories, protein, fiber, iron, potassium, vitamin E and mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Heart Health
A study organized by the American Heart Association, found that eating a daily handful of almonds may lower LDL (bad) cholesterol by 4.4 percent. Those who ate two handfuls lowered their cholesterol by 9.4 percent.

Weight Loss
A study found in the International Journal of Obesity, conducted in 2003, showed that by adding a daily portion of almonds to a low calorie diet significantly improved risk factors associated with heart disease. The researchers also found that heart-healthy, LDL- lowering, monounsaturated fat was satiating, which prevented the subjects from overeating.

Almonds have a wide variety of antioxidant compounds. Antioxidants in the diet protect the body from toxicities naturally occurring or introduced to the body by the environment. Antioxidants can prevent cell damage potentially leading to heart disease, cancer and stroke.
