Conference explores advising sophomores

"Sophomore Year: Critical Turning Points for Students and Their Academic Advisers" is the theme of this year's Professional Development Conference on Academic Advising, which takes place Thursday afternoon through Friday, Oct. 4 and 5, at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel, University Park.

This event will interest academic advisers, faculty members who advise or anyone interested in the field of academic advising. Conference fees and registration information are available at online.

Keynote speakers are Rajesh Bellani, dean of the Sophomore-Year Experience at Colgate University in New York; Paul Amato, distinguished professor of sociology and demography; and Jennifer Maggs, associate professor of human development and family studies. Session topics include career planning for sophomores, sophomore students at risk, engaging and motivating sophomores, alcohol use and sexual behavior, study abroad for sophomores, family backgrounds of today's students and the virtual world of sophomores.

Conference sponsors are Penn State's Office of Undergraduate Education, University Faculty Senate, Division of Undergraduate Studies and The Mentor: An Academic Advising Journal.
