Free prostate cancer screening offered at Penn State Hershey

Penn State Cancer Institute and the Division of Urology, Department of Surgery, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center are offering a free prostate cancer screening as part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17 and Wednesday, Sept. 19, medical staff will screen eligible men at Penn State University Physician Groupâ€"Suite 3100, 500 University Drive, Hershey. Penn State Hershey Medical Center has provided these free screenings for more than 15 years.

Men ages 40-75, men older than age 35 with a family history of prostate cancer, African-American and Hispanic men are eligible. The screening includes a prostate-specific antigen (protein) blood test and a digital rectal exam. The screening is free of charge; registration is required and limited. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in America among men -- taking one life every 18 minutes and diagnosed every 2-1/4 minutes, according to the National Prostate Cancer Coalition. It is expected that more than 218,000 men will be diagnosed this year. In fact, prostate cancer represents 33 percent of all new cancer cases in American men. When caught and treated early, prostate cancer has a cure rate of more than 90 percent.
