Alumni reunion to showcase regional flavor with wineries tour

For an enjoyable afternoon getaway, alumni of Penn State Erie are invited to visit two North Coast wineries during this year's Alumni Reunion on Sept. 29. Participants will have the opportunity to get together with former classmates while enjoying a tour of establishments owned by members of the Penn State family.

"The local wineries are a treasure in northwest Pennsylvania and we're thrilled to be able to showcase them again this year," said Margie Taylor, director of development and alumni relations at Penn State Erie. Now in its third year, the annual wineries tour is a favorite among returning alumni.

The first stop will be Arrowhead Wine Cellars, which boasts one of the region's largest winery gift shops. The tour will then move on to Presque Isle Wine Cellars, located in a wooded area beside Twelve Mile Creek. A variety of local favorites will be available to sample at the wineries, both known for producing award-winning wines.

While the tours are not strictly guided, information will be readily available along with staff members happy to explain the aspects of wine-making.

The tours will depart at 3 p.m. from the Reed Union Building at Penn State Erie. While there is no fee, reservations may be made at http://www.behrend.psu.edu/alumni/Reunion07.htm online. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early as seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

In addition to the winery tours, a full day's schedule of events will be offered Sept. 29; all are free of charge unless otherwise indicated.

The morning's activities include walking tours of campus and the Penn State Erie Arboretum, plus the opportunity to return to class with fall planting and golf workshops.

Enjoy lunch on the lawn and circus activities in front of Reed Union Building -- but save room for a mid-afternoon indulgence of Berkey Creamery ice cream while taking in the sounds of the Penn State Erie Jazz Band.

Celebrate the Erie Lions of past and present throughout the day at one of six athletic events, including tennis, water polo, soccer and volleyball matches and the Athletic Hall of Fame dinner.

Then wrap up the evening with Chancellor Jack Burke's reception before settling in for the awe-inspiring antics of Big Top Entertainment.

For information on the winery tours or these additional events or to register, call the Penn State Erie Alumni office at (8140 898-6159. Attendance reservations should be made by Saturday, Sept. 15.
