Bus service to, from New York City picks up speed

University Park, Pa. -- The Big Apple Express service offering weekend bus service to and from New York City is available every weekend, departing State College at 2:30 p.m. Fridays and taking passengers right into midtown New York City.

The service got off to a roaring start Friday, Oct. 5, with a busload of students hitting the road for a weekend in the city that never sleeps.

The bus arrives at 7:15 p.m. at New York's Port Authority Bus Terminal, 625 8th Ave. between 40th and 42nd streets, just in time for a fancy New York City dinner or Broadway show. Tickets for the convenient trip are $40 one way and $80 round trip. Departure and arrival times may vary due to weather or traffic conditions.

For people in New York who want to spend a weekend in Happy Valley, the express returns to State College at 8 p.m. Fridays from Port Authority Bus Terminal. This will be helpful to those who would like to visit Penn State and the surrounding community for the weekend. On Sunday, buses will leave State College at 11 a.m. and arrive in the city around 3:45 p.m., departing at 5 p.m. for the return to State College, with an estimated arrival time of 9:30 p.m. This service is available from Penn State Transportation, along with Fullington Tours.

Tickets can be purchased at the Bus Depot at 152 N. Atherton St. in State College or by calling (814) 238-1100 or (814) 238-7971. Online ticket purchases are not yet available.

People with disabilities are asked to call (800) 942-8287 to coordinate accessibility needs up to 48 hours in advance. This new express service will run for a trial period during the fall and spring semesters. Success of the service will determine whether the express will continue next year.
