Gutgold publishes 'Seen and Heard: The Women of Television News'

Nichola D. Gutgold, associate professor of communication arts and sciences at Penn State Lehigh Valley, recently published "Seen and Heard: The Women of Television News," by Lexington Books, a division of Rowman and Littlefield Publishers Inc.

The book examines the lives, careers and communication styles of 12 of the most compelling and recognizable women of television news, including Christiane Amanpour, Elizabeth Vargas, Diane Sawyer, Paula Zahn, Judy Woodruff and Candy Crowley. From Barbara Walters' vast career that spans more than half a century to Katie Couric's historic appointment as the sole anchor of the CBS Evening News, this book explores the obstacles and opportunities for women in broadcasting.

Gutgold graduated from King's College, Wilkes-Barre, in 1984 with a double major in mass communications and English. In 1988, she earned a master's degree in speech communication from Bloomsburg University, and in 1999 she earned a doctoral degree in speech communication from Penn State. Gutgold teaches a variety of speech communication courses, coordinates the honors program, advises students and engages in research. She received the 2006 Outstanding Research and/or Creative Accomplishment Award, the 2004 Penn State Excellence in Advising Award, the 2002 Lehigh Valley Campus Teaching Excellence, and the 1997 Student Appreciation and Recognition Award. In addition to her work at the University, Gutgold also works as a communication trainer and speaker for various organizations. She is the author of "Paving the Way for Madam President"; (Lexington Books, 2006) and co-author of "Elizabeth Hanford Dole: Speaking from the Heart" (Praeger Press, 2004).

Gutgold is a member of the National Communication Association, Eastern Communication Association and is vice president of the Pennsylvania Communication Association. In 2004 and 2000, she served as a faculty leader at the Republican National Convention.
