Diabetes Alert Day observed on March 25

March 25 is the American Diabetes Association's Diabetes Alert Day, sounding the alert about the seriousness of diabetes. The disease affects nearly 21 million Americans, with another 54 million at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Staff at Penn State Hershey Diabetes encourages all to take the association's diabetes risk assessment test at www.diabetes.org/alert. This simple assessment test can help a person determine if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

People who are overweight, under active (living a sedentary lifestyle), and over the age of 45 should consider themselves at risk for the disease. African-Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and people who have a family history of the disease are at an increased risk for type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes care and outcomes are one of Penn State Hershey's organizational quality initiatives. The goal is to improve A1c and LDL levels, and compliance with yearly eye exams to identify early eye disease.
