March 26, 2008

University Park, Pa. -- Several Penn State centers with a focus on the sports industry will present an interdisciplinary panel discussion  with Pittsburgh Steelers' Chairman Dan Rooney, son of the Steelers' founder Art "the Chief" Rooney, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 7, in 110 Business Building, University Park.

The panel discussion, "Sports Governance and Equal Opportunity: The Life's Perspectives of Pittsburgh Steelers' Chairman Dan Rooney," commemorates the recent publication of Rooney's autobiography, "Dan Rooney: My 75 Years with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the NFL."

Panelists will discuss the Rooney family's role with the NFL from several different perspectives: Penn State Athletic Director Timothy Curley will address the similarities and differences between the Rooney's role in NFL governance and the role of an athletic director in governing the Big Ten Conference; Vice President for Educational Equity Terrell Jones will discuss the Rooney family's acts and promotion of NFL rules designed to increase diversity in front office management and coaching, and the implications of these initiatives for broader concerns about diversity and equity; Director of The Penn State Institute for Sports Law, Policy and Research, Law Professor Stephen Ross will tackle the Rooney family's role as extraordinary owners in governing the NFL, and whether the league's structure is well designed in light of the behavior of typical owners.

The panel discussion was initiated by the Penn State Institute for Sports Law, Policy and Research, as part of its mission to promote dialogue between students of sport and major industry participants, aid scholars in policy-oriented research and facilitate the dissemination of this research to policy makers and industry participants, and serve as resource for journalists, lawyers and others concerned about sports and public policy. This mission is enhanced by the program’s co-sponsors, the Center for Sports Business & Research in the Smeal College of Business, the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism, and the Department of Athletics.
