UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Fourteen scholars and researchers in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences have been recognized by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE) for the third edition of "The Dairy Reference Manual."
The manual earned a Blue Ribbon Award in ASAE's 1996 Educational Aids Competition. Nearly 100 entries were displayed and judged at the ASAE Annual Meeting. The manual was among 20 entries to receive recognition.
"The Dairy Reference Manual," a compendium of information about all facets of dairy production, is designed to allow quick access to facts about such topics as ration balancing, designing a ventilation system for a freestall barn, and identifying the causes of mastitis. It is the second revision of the original "Penn State Dairy Reference Manual," first published in 1966 and used around the world.
Penn State faculty and staff who contributed to the manual included Dr. Richard Adams, professor emeritus of dairy science; Dr. John Comerford, associate professor of animal science; Dr. Stephen Ford, associate professor of agricultural economics; Dr. Robert Graves, professor of agricultural engineering; Dr. William Heald, professor of dairy science; Dr. Jud Heinrichs, professor of dairy science; Dr. William Henning, associate professor of animal science; Dr. Lawrence Hutchinson, professor of veterinary science; Virginia Ishler, program assistant in dairy and animal science; Dr. Michael O'Connor, professor of dairy science; Dr. Lawrence Specht, professor emeritus of dairy science; Dr. Stephen Spencer, professor emeritus of dairy science; Dr. Gabriella Varga, professor of animal science; and Dr. Robert Yonkers, assistant professor of agricultural economics.
The American Society of Agricultural Engineers presents the Educational Aids Blue Ribbon Awards each year in recognition of outstanding effort and achievement in the development of noteworthy educational aids. The entries are judged by the ASAE Extension Committee.
The competition encourages agricultural engineers in industry and public service to strive for excellence in extension activities through the interchange of ideas on successful methods and techniques. It also promotes excellence in those aids which represent agricultural engineering and through the exchange of ideas and individual recognition, contributes to overall improvement in the use of educational aids.
Published by the Northeast Regional Agricultural Engineering Service, the 293-page, wire-bound Dairy Reference Manual contains 13 chapters, three appendices, 240 tables and 88 illustrations.
The manual is used by extension agents, consultants and farm planners, veterinarians, engineers, manufacturers, salespeople, and others who need a comprehensive, easy-to-use desk reference about dairy farming.
