In the mid-summer doldrums of journalism, there is still a need for expert advice on holiday activities for the Fourth of July.

Journalists in television and print media may need a few expert sources that can quickly offer tips or quotes.

Professors in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences have a wide range of expertise in a variety of holiday issues ranging from food safety to planting bulbs.

The following faculty members can offer expertise for Fourth of July stories.

-- J. Lynne Brown, associate professor of food science. Brown is an expert on nutrition and how consumers make decisions about foods and food products. Her office number is 814-863-3973.

-- Stephen Knabel, associate professor of food science. Knabel can speak knowledgeably about all aspects of food safety, particularly food-borne pathogens such as E. coli, Salmonella and Listeria. He is an expert on cooking safety, especially as it relates to barbecuing. His office number is 814-863-1372.

-- Edward Mills, associate professor of dairy and animal science. Mills, who is faculty coordinator for the Penn State Meats laboratory, is an expert on all types of meat, particularly beef, pork, poultry, sausage and cured meats. His office number is 814-865-2394.

-- Charles Pitts, professor of entomology. Pitts is knowledgeable about outdoor pests such as flies, mosquitoes and ants. His office number is 814-863-7789.

-- Robert Nuss, professor of ornamental horticulture. Nuss is extremely knowledgeable of all aspects of home plant care from gardening to trimming trees. His office number is 814-863-2196.
