Women's soccer picked to finish first in Big Ten

University Park, Pa. — The Penn State women's soccer team has been voted to finish a top the Big Ten in 2008 by the conference coaches, as announced Monday (Aug. 18) by the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions are entering the 2008 season on a quest for their 11th consecutive Big Ten Title. This selection marks the sixth-straight year that the Nittany Lions have been tabbed pre-season favorites by the Big Ten coaches.

Penn State's 10-consecutive titles streak is tied for the second-longest championship run in Big Ten history. The streak is also the longest active streak nationally.

The Nittany Lions went 18-4-2 last season and 9-1-0 in Big Ten play en route to their 10th title. They also made their 13th-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament hosting the first three rounds of play. They finished ranked No. 12 in the nation just missing out on their 11th time finishing in the top-10. They have already been ranked No. 9 in the country in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) Pre-Season Top 25.

Head coach Erica Walsh will lead her troops into battle to open the season this weekend at William & Mary. The game kicks-off at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23. The first Big Ten meeting comes Friday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. as the Nittany Lions travel to Indiana.
