Free prostate cancer screenings planned for September

Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute and Penn State Hershey Urology, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center are offering free prostate cancer screenings and educational programs as part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Screenings will be held in Hershey from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, and Wednesday, Sept. 17, in Suite 3100 of the University Physician Center on the campus of the Medical Center. Space is limited. Appointments are available on a first-call basis. To register, call the CareLine at (800) 243-1455.

Screenings will be held in Harrisburg from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, and Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Penn State University Physician Group-Front Street, 1711 N. Front St., Harrisburg. Registration is not required. For questions, call the CareLine at (800)-243-1455.

The screening includes a prostate specific antigen (protein) blood test and a digital rectal exam. Men ages 40-75 and African-American men, Hispanic men and men older than age 35 with a family history of prostate cancer are eligible.

Free educational programs about prostate cancer will be held in Harrisburg on:

  • Saturday, Sept. 13, 11 a.m.-noon, Rose of Sharon Baptist Church, 1919 N. Fourth St., Harrisburg;
     
  • Monday, Sept. 15, 7-8 p.m., Bethesda Mission, 611 Reily St., Harrisburg;
     
  • Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1-2 p.m., St. Martin De Porres Catholic Worker House, 1440 Market St., Harrisburg.

Prostate cancer strikes one in six American men. When caught and treated early, prostate cancer has a cure rate of more than 90 percent.
