'Movement in Space': Symposium on the arts in public life planned

"Movement in Space," a symposium on the circulation of ideas between artists, critics, scholars and audiences, will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 26 in the Lipcon auditorium of the Palmer Museum. "Movement in Space" is the inaugural event of the Arts in Public Life group, an interdisciplinary group funded by the Institute for Arts and Humanities. Featured speakers at the "Movement in Space" symposium include the 2008 Pulitzer Prize finalist and architecture critic Inga Saffron, the Pushcart Prize-winning poet and scholar Terrance Hayes, the award-winning playwright and actor Lynn Manning, and several members of the Penn State faculty.

The program follows:
All events except lunch will be in the Lipcon Auditorium of the Palmer Museum.

-- 10 a.m.: Inga Saffron, architecture critic, Philadelphia Inquirer; introduction: Ann Shostrum, School of Visual Arts; respondent: Donald Kunze, Departments of Architecture and Integrative Arts.

-- 11 a.m.: Terrance Hayes, professor of creative writing, Carnegie Mellon University; introduction: Gabeba Baderoon, Departments of Women's Studies and African and African-American Studies, Penn State; respondent: Robin Becker, Departments of English and Women's Studies.

-- Noon to 1 p.m.: lunch.

-- 1 p.m.: Lynn Manning, poet, playwright and actor; introduction: Dan Carter, Department of Theater Arts; respondent: Charles Dumas, Department of Theater Arts and African and African-American Studies.

-- 2 p.m.: Roundtable  featuring Saffron; Hayes; Manning; Julia Kasdorf, Department of English; Charles Garoian, School of Visual Art;
Jonathan Eburne, Departments of Comparative Literature and English; and moderator: Baderoon.

The event is free to the public.
