College offers free health programs to students, faculty and staff

Penn State Berks Health Services is offering three free health-related programs for students, faculty, and staff as part of “Be Healthy Week” September 29–October 3.

Health Services invites students, faculty, and staff to learn more about nutrition topics on Monday, September 29, from 7:00–8:00 p.m. in the Perkins Student Center Multipurpose Room. Andrea Dillaway-Huber PhD, RD, LDN will speak to students about nutritional labels, sugar substitutes, and supplements.

On Wednesday, October 1, there will be a presentation on strategies to conquer the “freshman 15” and the significance of the body mass index by Alice Holland, MSN, CRNP, Nurse Practitioner at Penn State Berks, from 1:00–2:00 p.m. in the Penn State Room in the Perkins Student Center. Holland will speak to students about strategies they can use to avoid gaining the weight nearly all students put on during their first year of college. The session will also explain the BMI, how it is calculated, and why is it good to know your numbers. BMI is the measure of an individual’s body fat based on height and weight. The percentage of body fat is directly related to susceptibility to disease.

Finally, the college will offer depression screenings for students from Tuesday, September 30; Thursday, October 2; and Friday, October 3 from 12:00–1:30 p.m. on the second floor lobby of the Perkins Student Center.
