Penn State community support is key to success of United Way

By Rob Pangborn and Graham Spanier

In tough economic times everyone looks for ways to trim costs to make ends meet. It is precisely during such times that the Centre County United Way needs the most help. Financial downturns mean more people turn to United Way agencies. The 37 agencies and programs served by Centre County United Way need our help every day, and especially now.

In past economic slowdowns Penn State employees have stepped up to support the United Way, and we're confident we can count on our University community to come through once again this year. We're proud of the efforts of so many of our employees who donate their time and talent as well as their financial resources to support the efforts of this valuable community resource. Centre County United Way provides services to one in three people in the region, focusing on the needs of children, the elderly and families.

This year the University has set a goal of $800,000, which is nearly 40 percent of the overall $2.1 million community fundraising campaign.  The Penn State campaign is off to an extremely good start, with more than $100,000 raised so far from special events and retiree contributions. Giving to the United Way is easy through convenient payroll deductions that spread out donations over 12 months.

Individual contributions comprise more than three-quarters of the Penn State goal, and are bolstered by the proceeds of special events such as the annual Trash to Treasure sale at Beaver Stadium and a golf outing.

By participating in the Centre County United Way campaign, Penn State employees help strengthen families and communities, promote the well-being of children, and improve the quality of life for everyone in Centre County. We encourage you to join this effort.

Rob Pangborn, vice president and dean of Undergraduate Education, is chair of this year’s University campaign. Graham Spanier is president of Penn State.
