IST students, alumni plan conference for young entrepreneurs

University Park, Pa. — After success at other universities, Startup Weekend, a conference aimed at young entrepreneurs, is coming to Penn State and the College of Information Science and Technology (IST) Oct. 24-26.

The two-day conference will be held in the College of Information Science and Technology’s Cybertorium and will offer students the chance to network and discuss business ideas with entrepreneurs in the State College area. The goal is for participants to walk out of the event with a finished prototype for a company or project.

Startup Weekend was founded in 2007 by entrepreneur Andrew Hyde. The first one was held in Boulder, Colo., and others have been held in cities including Boston and Washington, D.C. Future gatherings are planned in Atlanta, Detroit and Indianapolis.

The State College event is being organized by IST students and alumni including Robert Shedd (IST '07), founder of Lion Launch Pad, and Daehee Park (junior-SRA), founder of the social networking site Meezik.
