Student marshal selected for College of Communications

November 05, 2008

C.J. Hecht, a native of Pittstown, N.J., will serve as student marshal for the College of Communications during fall commencement exercises on Saturday, Dec. 20.

Hecht, 22, will complete his Penn State career with a 3.98 grade-point average, earning a degree in telecommunications with a minor in sociology. He will be accepting the diploma on behalf of the College of Communications in the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

The son of Charles and the late Donna Hecht, he will be escorted by faculty marshal Amit Schejter, an assistant professor in the Department of Telecommunications and co-director of the Institute for Information Policy.

"Dr. Schejter was one of my first professors at Penn State," said Hecht, who completed two years at the University of Miami before transferring to Penn State. "His class, which was extremely demanding, allowed me to realize the strong work ethic required to succeed, not only academically, but professionally as well. He was helpful, friendly and inspiring toward my future goals."

After graduation, Hecht hopes to become a sports broadcaster and host a play-by-play or talk show. He currently hosts a weekly sports talk show for ComRadio titled "The ILadelph," and has been involved with ComRadio for the past two and a half years. ComRadio is the webcasting station based in the College of Communications.

"I decided to go into telecommunications because of my dad. He runs a broadcast engineering and consulting firm and works with radio stations throughout the country on an independent basis," said Hecht. “I got thrown into that at an early age and started doing work in radio, which I love."

Hecht was involved in sports in high school, playing baseball, basketball and football, but started focusing less on playing and more on broadcasting when he arrived at Penn State. In addition to his work with ComRadio, he has done play-by-play coverage of State College Spikes baseball games and Penn State men’s basketball. During the summer of 2007, Hecht also completed an internship with ESPN Radio 920 in Philadelphia.

"Being student marshal is about having a strong academic performance and a well-rounded extracurricular career," he said. “"I realize other students may do more (activities) than I do, but I am very focused on what I do, and I put a lot of hard work and effort into it.”
