Energy guidelines for winter break

University Park, Pa. -- University energy rates are expected to double in the near future and Penn State is renewing efforts to conserve resources. The Office of Physical Plant reminds all employees to observe the following guidelines as they close up their areas for the holiday break:

• Shut off all office equipment and lights when you leave for break, including computers, monitors, printers, copiers, coffee makers, and task lighting.

• Unplug iPods, digital cameras, and cell phone chargers when not in use.

• Close all office and classroom doors. Make sure operable windows are closed too.

• Drawing curtains or closing blinds also will help retain building heat.

• Remember that personal portable space heaters are NOT permitted in University buildings unless provided by OPP for extraordinary circumstances. Officially provided space heaters must be turned off when areas are not occupied.

• Finally, don't forget to enhance your holiday shopping with energy-efficient gifts such as compact fluorescent light bulbs or L.E.D. outdoor lighting. Energy conserving gifts help to keep the holidays "green."
