Communications students provided coverage of Inauguration

January 16, 2009

Seven broadcast journalism students and two journalism faculty members from the College of Communications provided online coverage of Inauguration Day on Jan. 20 from Washington, D.C.

Their streaming updates from the nation’s capital appear at http://commedia.psu.edu as the result of a collective, volunteer effort by students who are members of the University Park campus chapter of the Radio and Television News Directors Association (RTNDA), and  by members of the Web-based student radio station, ComRadio.

Faculty members Marea Mannion and Curt Chandler accompanied the students as the faculty adviser/field producer and Web producer, respectively.

Junior Amy Auburt, a journalism major from West Chester, Pa., and president of the Penn State RTNDA chapter, helped coordinate much of the effort along with the faculty. Students will split duties between television and radio reports from various locations on the National Mall and the parade route.

Along with live or taped radio and television updates online on the ComMedia site, the students packaged additional stories to air later on ComMedia and to air on ComRadio, the Web-based radio station for the College of Communications. Other reports will appear on  "Centre County Report," the weekly news program produced by students in the College of Communications, and on a new public affairs show being produced by Mannion and the RTNDA student chapter.
