Pepsi (Hutton): Choice of a new generation

The Pepsi generation has found a home at Penn State New Kensington.

We don’t mean the iconic cola that has been the official soft drink of Penn State since 1995. We mean the vivacious kinesiology instructor, Pepsi Hutton, who joined the campus faculty in fall 2008. And yes, that is her real name. Her parents are loyal customers and made a great call when they named their daughter after the soda that was billed as "the choice of a new generation."

"My parents loved the pop and pictured me as bubbly, active, and full of life," said Hutton, a native of Lisbon, Ohio.

And she hasn’t disappointed. Hutton brings a refreshing approach to the Kinesiology department where she teaches five courses and directs the intramural sports program. She is in the process of revamping and expanding intramural sports and encouraging faculty and staff to participate in yoga, strength training, and pilates programs. A Pepsi challenge, so to speak.

"I want implement a comprehensive intramural sports program for students and develop non-credit courses for the campus and local communities," said Hutton, who currently resides in Mars, Pa. "I would also like to see an increase in the number of Kinesiology majors."

Prior to coming to the New Kensington campus, Hutton served as associate director of recreation programs at Cleveland State University and coordinator of fitness and wellness at Kent State University, her alma mater.
Since earning a bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies and a master’s degree in Sport and Recreation Management from Kent State, Hutton has been involved with fitness and wellness activities on all levels. She has coordinated programs, operated facilities, and generated revenue-producing programs. Hutton is a certified personal trainer and has presented papers at numerous professional conferences.
