New book looks at socialism in Latin America

March 03, 2009

University Park, Pa. -- Charles D. Ameringer, professor emeritus of Latin American history at Penn State, is author of "The Socialist Impulse: Latin America in the Twentieth Century," published by the University Press of Florida (February 2009) and available online at http://www.upf.com.

Ameringer's book covers a wide range of countries and decades. He concludes that whatever the variety of socialism attempted in Latin America, none has stood the test of time. By analyzing the socialist movement and governments that evolved he is able to highlight the events and factors that led to their eventual collapse.
