Professor of music education to give a series of lectures

University Park, Pa. - Steven Demorest, professor of music education at the University of Washington, will give a series of free public lectures on Thursday, March 19, in Music Building I on the Penn State University Park campus. "Teaching Musicianship in the Choral Rehearsal" is at 9:45 a.m. in Room 110; "Developing a Program of Research" at 1 p.m. in Room 102; and "Lost in Translation: Exploring Cross-Cultural Music Cognition" at 2:30 p.m. in Room 100. The School of Music Center for the Study of Music Learning and Teaching is sponsoring Demorest's lectures.
 
Demorest received his bachelor's degree in music from Luther College, masters of music. in choral conducting from Westminster Choir College and his doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the author of "Building Choral Excellence: Teaching Sight-Singing in the Choral Rehearsal," published by Oxford University Press, and has published numerous book chapters, articles and research papers on music education and choral singing. Demorest's recent research includes cross-cultural musical understanding, music cognition, sight-singing pedagogy and the application of neuro-imaging techniques to music research.
