Denise Balawejder, computer support assistant in Information Services at Penn State Great Valley, has received the 2009 Support Staff Award.

The award recognizes the overall high quality performance of a full-time member of the support staff with at least five years of active service in fulfilling the mission of the University and of his or her college or administrative unit. It also recognizes dedicated focus to customer service, commitment to quality improvement, outstanding skills and abilities, teamwork and professionalism.

As a member of the Information Services team at Great Valley, Balawejder is one of the key personnel faculty, staff and students turn to for computer assistance, whether for training, problem solving or equipment purchases. Her timely and correct response to users' problems has earned her a reputation on campus as "smart, responsive and completely courteous."

Balawejder staffs, trains and manages Great Valley’s Computer Center Help Desk. In her previous role as staff assistant to the director of Information Services, she built a database system to track purchasing and software licensing, greatly improving the efficiency of using existing software licenses and saving the cost of unneeded software.

In response to a request from the campus Marketing Department, she collaborated with users to design, develop and deploy an Access database to maintain and track publication projects.

According to one nominator, “Her activities cut across all functions of the campus. Her sense of what needs to be done and her take-charge personality help bring confidence to others. Whenever Ms. Balawejder is in charge of a project, there is acknowledgment that the job will be done and done correctly.”
