March 23, 2009

University Park, Pa. -- Louise Fortmann, professor of natural resource sociology and Rudy Grah Chair in Forestry and Sustainable Development in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at the University of California at Berkeley, will present "Doing Science Together: Concepts and Practices in Participatory Research on Conservation and Rural Livelihoods," at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 27 in 215 Armsby Building on the University Park campus.

The presentation is part of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology M.E. John Seminar Series.

A conceptual framework will be presented for thinking about participatory scientific research based on insights from six case studies of participatory research in rural Asia, Africa, Europe, and Central and North America. The knowledge of local people is shown to be scientific. Some lessons for carrying out participatory research will be presented. Sixty researchers, including forty villagers, were involved in carrying out the scientific research to be discussed.
