University Park, Pa. -- Between 200 and 300 youth and their families descended upon the Earth and Engineering Sciences Building on Saturday, March 28, for a day of rocks and minerals fun. The annual event, Minerals Junior Education Day, is sponsored by the Nittany Mineralogical Society Inc., Penn State Earth and Mineral Sciences Museum, Junior Museum of Central Pennsylvania and the Bald Eagle Chapter of the Gold Prospectors Association of America.
The event featured eight stations which included demonstrations, discussions and activities for youth between first and eighth grade. At each station, participants were able to receive a sample crystal, mineral or fossil specimen for their personal collection. Penn State faculty, staff and students led the activities along with representatives of the co-sponsoring community groups.
